How to choose the right glass clamp
Every clamp is made for a specific glass thickness, so measure across the edge of your panel or check the glass specification. Our current range covers 10mm, 12mm, 15mm and 17.5mm glass.
Clamps come in different back profiles to suit the surface: flat backs for walls and square posts, curved backs for round posts. Our current range is designed for flat surfaces. If you’re fixing to round posts, call us for advice.
For anything outside, you need grade 316 stainless steel. Cheaper 304 grade clamps are often sold for indoor use only and can mark or rust outdoors. All our clamps are 316 grade.
Match the clamps to your posts or handrail. Satin stainless steel is standard, with mirror polished, matt black (RAL 9005) and anthracite grey (RAL 7016) available on request.
It must match your glass thickness exactly. A clamp made for 10mm glass won’t grip 12mm glass securely, and a larger clamp won’t hold thinner glass tightly. Measure across the edge of the panel, or check your glass specification. Laminated glass is often quoted slightly differently (e.g. 17.5mm glass may be listed as 17.52mm, because of the interlayer), so if you’re unsure, call us before ordering.
Both are stainless steel, but 316 contains molybdenum, which makes it far more resistant to salt, rain and pollution. 304 clamps are fine indoors, but outside they can develop brown “tea staining” or surface rust, especially near the coast or busy roads. For any outdoor balustrade, decking or poolside project, choose 316.
It depends on what you’re fixing into. Brick and concrete need masonry anchors or a chemical resin fixing. Timber posts take heavy-duty wood screws. Steel posts are usually drilled and tapped, or fixed with self-tapping screws. Whatever the surface, the fixing needs to be as strong as the clamp, so poor fixings are the most common reason clamped glass works loose.
Yes, for infill panels between posts, as long as the posts, handrail and fixings are designed for the height and loads involved. Clamps alone aren’t designed to support a structural frameless balustrade; that needs a base channel or spigot system. Where glass guards a drop, it also needs to meet Building Regulations, so talk to our team if you’re unsure.
Typically 300mm to 600mm apart, with at least two clamps on each fixing side of a panel. Larger or heavier panels need clamps closer together. As a rough guide, a 10mm toughened panel weighs around 25kg per square metre, so a 1m x 1m panel is heavier than many people expect. For large panels, check with us before ordering.
