SHP has been installing these systems for years, and they still impress us every time. There’s something very special about a balustrade that seems to disappear, leaving nothing but clear views and clean lines.
The cleanest look you can get – nothing but glass
If you’re after the absolute minimum visual interruption between you and your view, this is it. Our frameless glass balustrade kit gives you that floating glass look that high-end architects charge a fortune to design.
Ready to order your frameless glass balustrade kit?
If you know what you need, go ahead and order online. We keep these kits in stock and can usually dispatch within 1-2 working days.
Not quite sure if this is the right system for your project? Let’s chat! We’d rather spend a few minutes helping you choose the right product than have you order something unsuitable. We’re helpful like that.
Need a custom size or have an unusual installation? We can usually sort that too. Just get in touch to discuss your requirements.
For starters, it’s complete. You’d be amazed how many “kits” out there leave out crucial bits, forcing you to source components separately or discover halfway through installation that you need to order more parts.
This 1-metre kit includes everything: the toughened glass panel, the heavy-duty base channel, all the fixings, and even the proper glazing blocks and gaskets that many suppliers conveniently forget to mention.
The base channel is the business – 2.5mm thick aluminium with a proper satin anodised finish that won’t peel or discolour like cheaper painted channels. It’s designed specifically for base-fixing to solid concrete or similar surfaces.
And the glass? It’s 15mm toughened – thick enough to meet regulations without needing a handrail on top. That’s the key to achieving that proper frameless look.
These base-fix kits are ideal for:
- Concrete balconies or terraces
- Solid stone or tiled patios
- Roof terraces with proper structural decking
- Indoor applications like mezzanine floors or stair landings
The key requirement is a solid, level surface to fix to. If you’re looking to fix to timber decking, check out our post-mounted systems instead – they’re designed specifically for that application.
Each 1-metre kit contains:
- 1 x 15mm toughened glass panel (1000mm wide x 970mm high)
- 1 x 1m aluminium base channel (satin anodised finish)
- Glazing gaskets and setting blocks
- All necessary fixings for concrete installation
- Detailed installation instructions
The glass panels have polished edges all round and are manufactured to BS EN 12150 standards. No sharp edges, no dodgy quality – just safety glass that’ll stand the test of time.
We won’t lie to you – handling 15mm toughened glass isn’t like hanging a picture frame. These panels have some weight to them, and they need treating with respect. But with the right approach, fitting this system is well within reach of anyone who’s decent at DIY.
The make-or-break part is getting that base channel spot on. It needs to be dead level and properly secured. I’ve seen jobs where someone’s rushed this bit, and the whole installation looked wonky. Spend time here – use decent fixings (the ones we supply, not some random screws from the bottom of your toolbox), check your levels repeatedly, and make sure it’s rock solid before the glass goes in.
You’ll want a mate to help with the glass handling. Even with proper glass suckers (which I strongly recommend using), it’s a two-person job to manoeuvre these panels safely into position. Take your time, don’t force anything, and remember – measure twice, drill once.
If you’re fitting multiple panels in a row, use a spacer to keep the gaps consistent. We recommend 10mm between panels – enough to allow for thermal movement but not so wide that it looks gappy. A couple of offcuts of 10mm timber work perfectly for this.
Not confident about taking it on? SHP can offer installation services too. We know what we’re doing, and it won’t break the bank to get professional help if you need it.
Always a boring topic, but an important one. These 15mm glass panels comply with UK building regulations for domestic applications when installed correctly. The glass is thick enough to be used without a handrail in most situations.
That said, regulations can vary depending on the specific application and location. If you’re unsure, give us a call – we can advise on what’s needed for your particular project.
Most projects need more than a single panel, obviously. These kits are designed to be installed side by side to create longer runs. The glass panels sit with a neat 10mm gap between them, close enough to prevent anything falling through, but with enough space to allow for thermal expansion.
For larger projects, you can use our balustrade designer and calculator to get an instant quote. Or give us a call to discuss pricing for your specific requirements.
